Iris versicolor is a perennial species (SPEC) in the Iridaceae family. A native to eastern U.S. and eastern Canada. Some familiar names are purple iris, Harlequin Blueflag, Northern Blue Flag, Liver Lily, Water Iris, and Larger Blue Flag. It grows wild in marshes, meadows, and along shores and streambanks. It grows to around 2-3 feet tall and 18 inches wide. It forms clumps from its rhizomes with sword-like basal leaves that are usually taller than the plant itself. The deep blue flowers are complex and very showy. It is in bloom from May until July. It attracts butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. It prefers to grow in full sun with wet soil if available. It can survive with regular soil as well. Zones 4-8 Germination Mix seeds and soil and moisten the mix slightly in a ziplock bag. Write the name of the seed on the bag.
