Impatiens sodenii subsp. oliveri is a robust, evergreen perennial native to East Africa, often referred to as Poor Man's Rhododendron. It typically grows up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall, with thick, fleshy stems and large, elongated, lance-shaped leaves that are deep green and slightly serrated. The plant is admired for its showy, soft pink to pale lavender flowers, which bloom year-round in warmer climates, but primarily in summer and fall. The flowers are tubular with a spur at the back, resembling typical impatiens blossoms but larger in size. It thrives in part shade to full shade and prefers well-draining, consistently moist soils. Due to its rapid growth, it makes an excellent choice for adding height and structure to shaded garden areas or woodland settings. However, it can become invasive in some regions if not carefully managed. Zones 9-11 Germination Impatiens sodenii subsp. oliveri seeds are relatively easy to germinate with the right conditions. The seeds should be sown on the surface of a well-draining seed mix and lightly pressed into the soil without covering, as they require light to germinate. Consistent moisture is crucial, so the soil should be kept evenly moist but not waterlogged. The ideal temperature for germination is between 20-25°C (68-77°F). A warm, humid environment helps to speed up the process, so placing the container in a propagator or covering it with a clear plastic lid can improve success rates. Germination typically occurs within 2-4 weeks, though it may vary depending on conditions. Once seedlings appear, they should be gradually acclimated to lower humidity and bright, indirect light.
